Windows 7/8 to get one extra-year of Skylake support

Windows 7/8 users who want to run them on Intel Skylake-powered devices will get full extended support until mid-July 2018.

Until yesterday, Microsoft had plans to completely cut off full support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 running on Skylake devices. The plan was to shut down this kind of assistance in mid-July 2017, but now it looks like things are getting much better.

Yesterday, Microsoft published an official blog post that outlines the terms and conditions that will apply from now on. "After July 2018, all critical Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 security updates will be addressed for Skylake systems until extended support ends for Windows 7, January 14, 2020 and Windows 8.1 on January 10, 2023" reads the post published by jkorst on the TechNet Blogs.

More than just desktop PCs or laptops, the new Intel sixth generation processors also power many embedded devices. Microsoft closes the article by adding that, compared to Windows 7, Skylake and Windows 10 can deliver up to 3 times the battery life and no less than 30 times better graphics than before.
